Kimberly Capone, Ph.D. is Research Associate Director & Fellow with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. in Skillman, NJ, where she leads the Microbiome Platform focused on identifying new insights from the human microbiome to drive innovation across the Consumer business. Dr. Capone received her B.S. in Biology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Capone’s undergraduate research at The Forsyth Institute was focused on the role of oral microbiota in periodontal disease. Her later graduate work focused on the pathogenesis of Legionella pneumophila in Legionnaire’s disease and Pontiac fever, and the role of extra-cellular iron-binding compounds in virulence. Her research now looks to harness the beneficial aspects of microbes, with the aim to elucidate the role of commensal microbes in human health and disease. The final goal of this work is to identify novel microbiome-based technologies to address unmet consumer needs today, with an eye towards the future of disease prevention.
A few areas of focus for the Microbiome Platform include the role of the microbiome in infancy and early child development, in individuals with sensitive or inflamed skin, and oral health. Dr. Capone has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, is a co-inventor on several patents, and has been an invited speaker at many national and international dermatology and pediatric conferences.
